THE ARTIST'S PARIS:
An Active Exploration
May 7-14, 2010

Experience Paris from an artist's perspective!

Join us for a stimulating week of looking, learning, and drawing. We'll engage your intellect, your intuition, and all of your senses as we explore the streets and museums of Paris - and record these experiences in travel sketchbooks.

Our October 2008 trip was a huge success. Here are a few comments:

"Magical."
"Truly wonderful."
"Susan's lectures brought all my art history courses to life."
"Filled with insights into the lesser known, parts of Paris culture."
"I'll remember this trip for the rest of my life."

What's special about this trip
  • Painter Susan Abbott is a teacher par excellence. She has traveled widely and taught drawing and painting extensively. This workshop will integrate visual inspiration, art history, and personal experience.
  • Using the city's fantastic museums as our classroom, we'll look at specific paintings together to learn about the artist, the time, and the craft. We'll follow the flow of French painting sequentially, from Watteau to Picasso.
  • In addition to guided museum visits, each day will include structured art activities designed to engage your senses and help you focus on important details.
  • You'll learn how to use gesture and contour drawing, text, collage and color to create a unique record of your travel experience. You'll record your Paris experiences in a visual travel journal.
  • Please note: Those without art experience are welcome, but this workshop does not include drawing instruction.
Sample Day

9 am - noon: After breakfast, we'll stroll the back streets of the 5th and 6th arrondissements, in search of green spaces, an atelier that belonged to Man Ray, hidden Delacroix paintings, and the patron saint of Paris. Art activities will help you focus and record your discoveries.

noon - 1:30 pm: Weather permitting, a lunch treasure hunt at a medieval market and picnic nearby.

1:30 - 5 pm: We'll look at Monet's giant water lily canvases at the recently reopened l'Orangerie, then cross the Seine to see more Impressionist work at Musée d'Orsay - all with commentary by Susan.

5 - 8 pm: Touch base with others, shop, or relax on your own.

8 - 10 pm: Dinner and the evening free. We'll help you choose a good value restaurant, a movie or club, a quiet (or lively) place for a drink, or a neighborhood rendered all the more beautiful by street lamp.
